HathiTrust does not own the intellectual property to the books in our collection. As a result, we are unable to sign any reuse agreement forms, and you will need to make your own determination as to whether you can reuse content from the HathiTrust collection.

📘 Instructions

Here are some tips to help you make that decision:

 • Check the copyright status of the book, which is displayed in the left sidebar under Rights. Consult our Access & Use Policy page to understand the different copyright statements. Please note that the copyright status is based on the entire text, and it is possible that current copyright holders, heirs or the estate of the authors of individual portions of the work, such as illustrations or photographs, assert copyrights over these portions.

 • Verify the copyright status of the material you wish to use. You will need to make your own assessment of the copyright or other legal concerns related to uses beyond those provided by HathiTrust for particular works.

 • For books that were digitized by Google, there may be restrictions on reuse of the scanned images of the text or OCR. There are no restrictions on use of text transcribed from the images, or paraphrased or translated using the images. You can contact Google’s User Support team if desired for more clarification.

📘 Selling or reprinting public domain materials

HathiTrust books that were digitized by Google (note the watermarks on the page scans to confirm): They may not be re-hosted, re-distributed, or used commercially, as per our access & use policies. They are for educational/non-profit use only.

The only exception to reusing books that were digitized by Google is if both of the criteria below apply. If this is the case and you would like to re-host the book on your own platform, please contact the HathiTrust User Support team at support@hathitrust.org to secure this permission.

 • You are the copyright holder for the book

 • You have already opened access to the HathiTrust copy of the book using a Creative Commons license.

HathiTrust books that were not digitized by Google do not carry these restrictions. Please review the access and use policies carefully, as some items may be in the public domain in the United States but not worldwide, and it is possible that heirs or the estates of authors may claim rights to portions of items outside of the determinations we have made. To be sure, you may wish to speak to a copyright expert.

📘 Attributing HathiTrust as the source of reused images in your work

Where uses of public domain volumes are permitted according to the terms on our website, or appropriate permissions have been secured from rights holders, we request that HathiTrust be attributed as the source of the digital images with the addition of "courtesy of HathiTrust" to the citation, and that links to the digital images be included where possible.

You can find out more on our Access & Use Policy page.
